Description
This building is a cottage that was originally an engine house for the Fallowfield lead mine, built in 1779 and later extended in the 19th century. It is constructed of rubble with tooled quoins and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The rectangular engine house features a projecting square stack on the north side and pent additions on either side.
The south elevation has a central section that is two storeys high with a basement, flanked by single-storey pent additions, and a similar lower addition on the far right. The central part has four-pane casements under timber lintels, while the left addition contains a 20th-century window and the right addition features a renewed 16-pane sash under a timber lintel. Each of the central section and the right addition has a boarded basement door.
On the rear elevation, there is a three-stage stack with a band just below the top, and a renewed door with a three-pane overlight to the right. There is also an attached section of wall from another 18th-century building on the far right. This site is noted for its important industrial archaeological significance.
