Description

The Butler's Cottage, located west of Chesters Stables, is a house built in the late 19th century, likely designed by Norman Shaw. It is constructed from squared tooled stone, featuring tooled ashlar quoins and dressings, while the yard walls are made of snecked stone. The roof is covered with graduated Lakeland slate.

The south elevation has one storey and consists of two bays. It includes a chamfered plinth, a sill band, and a moulded eaves cornice supported by moulded brackets. The right bay is slightly set forward, and each bay contains a pair of 12-pane sash windows in moulded boxes. The pyramidal roof is topped with a large central stepped stack that has a moulded string and cornice.

The left return shows a similar window with a blind window to the right, while the right return features a projecting right bay with an 8-pane sash and two 12-pane sashes, along with a 6-panel door on the inner return. The yard walls have arched coping, and there is a boarded door on the east side between the house and the outbuilding, which has three boarded doors leading to the yard, with the central door being recessed and a hip-ended roof.
