Description

HUMSHAUGH CHESTERS NY 9070 14/227 The Butler's Cottage, west of Chesters Stables, with attached yard wall and outbuilding to rear

GV II

House, late C19 probably by Norman Shaw. Squared tooled stone with tooled ashlar quoins and dressings; yard walls snecked stone. Graduated Lakeland slate roof. South elevation 1 storey, 2 bays. Chamfered plinth, sill band, moulded eaves cornice with moulded brackets. Right bay set slightly forward; each bay has pair of 12-pane sash windows in moulded boxes. Pyramidal roof has large central stepped stack with moulded string and cornice. 2-bay left return shows similar window with blind window to right; right return shows projecting right bay with 8-pane and two 12-pane sashes; and 6-panel door on inner return.

Yard walls have arched coping, and boarded door on east between house and outbuilding which has 3 boarded doors to yard, the central recessed, and hip- ended roof.
