Description

Etal Castle's Great Tower is located at the north-west corner of the castle and is now separate from the other ruins. It was granted a licence to crenellate in 1342 for the Manners family. The tower is constructed of squared stone and stands four storeys tall, measuring 46 by 32 feet.

Originally, there was a forebuilding on the east side that included the ground-floor entrance and a newel stair; the footings of this structure remain. The main tower reaches eaves height, featuring a chamfered plinth and chamfered offsets above the second floor. On the ground floor, there is a small arched vent in the west wall. Each floor above has a two-light transomed window with cusped heads. Similar windows are present on the south side, and likely on the north side as well, although the details there have been lost. The east side, which was once part of the forebuilding, has a broad arched doorway with a continuous chamfer on the ground floor, and above it are two narrower arched doorways symmetrically arranged on each floor.

Inside, the ground floor features a pointed tunnel vault supported by seven chamfered transverse ribs, with the springing still visible. There are large segmental-arched fireplaces on the first and second floors, and the large windows have segmental rere arches, while some of the smaller windows have triangular rere arches.
