Description
The lych gate to the Church of St Mary the Virgin, dated 1893 on the rear tie-beam, was given by Viscount Ridley. It is made of oak set on a squared stone base and features a red tile roof with four gables. There are four steps leading up to double gates, which have a downswept top rail and round-topped stiles beneath a pointed arch. The tie beam is slightly cambered and has an inscription, below which is a carved corbel that supports a figure holding a book under a traceried canopy. The gate has carved bargeboards and a finial topped with a wrought-iron cross fleury. The sides are adorned with studding and open panels that feature traceried heads.
