Description
Todburn Steel Farmhouse is a pair of bastle houses that have been combined into one dwelling. They date from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with the western bastle being raised in the early 19th century and further alterations made in 1983. The building is constructed of large rubble with dressings and features a boulder plinth. The western part has a slate roof, while the eastern part is covered with asbestos sheets and has brick stacks.
The south elevation is two storeys high and has four irregular bays. The left two-bay section features four-pane sash windows on the first floor, with the ground floor partially obscured by a 20th-century glazed extension. The gables are coped, with stepped end stacks, and the left stack is corniced. The lower right section has a renewed door set in a chamfered surround, although the head of the door is partly cut away, and there is a 20th-century window to the right. There is also a 12-pane Yorkshire sash window and a 12-pane sash window in a former door opening, with a small blocked window between them. The left return of the building shows a blocked byre door in a chamfered heavy block surround, located inside a later outhouse.
Inside, the eastern bastle has walls that are 1.2 meters thick and is likely the earlier of the two. It retains some old first-floor beams, one principal-rafter truss with a collar, and two levels of purlins, while the ridge is a later addition.
