Description
The Lodge at Shepherds Dene is a lodge house, now a holiday let, built between 1906 and 1907. It was likely designed by the same architect as the main house at Shepherd's Dene, which is part of the estate. The building is constructed of snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a roof made of graduated stone slates with a roll-moulded ridge. The gable-end chimneys are made of coped ashlar and topped with round yellow pots, while the gables have flat stone copings that extend from block kneelers.
The lodge is two storeys high and consists of two bays. On the left side, there are 3-light casement windows on both floors, each with hood moulds, and above them is a small eaves gable with a vent slit. To the right, there is a filleted boarded door set in a plain stone surround, accompanied by small flanking windows and a two-light window above. To the left, there are stone mullioned windows with three lights on each floor, featuring alternate blocked jambs, flush sills, and lintels, all topped with label moulds. The north gable end has a single light window with a label mould above it on each floor.
At the rear, the left half of the building has a catslide roof, with a boarded door located beneath a two-pane overlight and flanking small windows. There is also a single-storey extension to the right, which includes a small window and a boarded door.
Inside, the entrance lobby leads to a living room on the left, which has leaded windows on two sides and a window seat at the larger window. There is a red marble fireplace with a modern grate and painted tiles, along with an original fitted corner cupboard. A passage leads to the kitchen, which features original cupboards and an overmantel surrounding the space for a range. The stairway from the entrance lobby leads to two bedrooms, each with original fireplaces and leaded light windows, one of which also has a fitted corner cupboard.
