Description
The memorial cross, located 300 metres east of Light Birks Farmhouse, dates from the late 19th century and is made of dressed stone. It features a Celtic-style wheel cross adorned with interlace and other decorative elements, along with the arms of Derwentwater on the shaft. The cross stands on a broad chamfered base that includes an inscription in a recessed panel. Above a square stone step, the inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF JAMES AND CHARLES VISCOUNTS LANGLEY EARLS OF DERWENTWATER BEHEADED ON TOWER HILL 24 FEB 1716 AND 8 DEC 1746 FOR LOYALTY TO THEIR LAWFUL SOVEREIGN." This memorial was erected by Cadwallader Bates, a historian who restored Langley Castle in the 1890s.
