Description

Wooley Cottage is a house from the early 18th century that has been built onto the south end of a bastle, which dates back to the 16th or early 17th century. The house is constructed of rubble with cut quoins and dressings, while the bastle features heavy rubble with massive quoins. The house has a stone slate roof with corniced gable stacks.

The front of the house has two tall storeys and two bays. There is a renewed door in a chamfered surround with remnants of a moulded cornice. To the left, there is a 16-pane sash window, and to the right, a 16-pane fixed stair window. On the first floor, the left side has a 16-pane sash window, while the right side features a blocked 2-light mullioned window. All windows have chamfered surrounds and have been mullioned.

The ruined bastle to the right has an off-centre chamfered doorway with a flattened Tudor-arched head and a drawbar tunnel in the left jamb. There is a similar doorway above and to the left, which is now blocked, and a blocked window in a chamfered surround above and to the right. The left side of the house has a 19th-century window in the attic. The rear elevation features one ground-floor and two first-floor shortened sashes in chamfered surrounds. The wall of the bastle to the left has a small blocked window.

Inside the house, there is an 18th-century stair with closed strings, turned balusters, and a ramped moulded handrail, along with 18th-century fireplaces and roof trusses with curved principals. The interior of the bastle shows a large first-floor fireplace with a chamfered surround and the stub of an upper cruck roof truss. The bastle is roofless at the time of the survey.
