Description

South Hall is an early 18th-century house built of ashlar stone with a stone slate roof, designed in an L-shape. The building has two and a half storeys and features seven bays, with rusticated quoins. The entrance, located in the second bay, has an early 18th-century door with decorative lower panels and a Gibbs surround topped with a cornice. A similar surround frames a window in the sixth bay to maintain symmetry. The windows are narrow 8-pane sashes set in raised moulded surrounds. The steeply-pitched gabled roof has a corniced end stack on the right and a quadripartite corniced ridge stack, while the left end stack has been removed. The roof is finished with flat coping and renewed kneelers.

On the left return, there is a Venetian stair window featuring Tuscan columns and thick glazing bars.

Inside, the house boasts a fine open-well staircase with carved tread ends, thick turned balusters, a wreathed and ramped handrail, and fluted newels. The half landing displays an inlaid marquetry sunburst, and on the first-floor landing, there is a large Baroque openwork panel instead of balusters. The back stair leading from the first to the second floor has more slender turned balusters, also from the early 18th century. The drawing room features early 18th-century fielded panelling with a dado rail and dentil cornice, while the entrance has panelling with simulated rustication and a niche with shaped shelves. Throughout the house, there are two-panel doors, and the front door is fitted with an 18th-century brass lock adorned with cherubs in the corners.
