Description
The outbuilding and yard wall to the north of Grovewood House is a coach-house and stable that dates back to 1862. It was designed by James Deason of London for the 4th Duke of Northumberland. The structure is built from snecked stone with tooled ashlar dressings and features a Lakeland slate roof.
The elevation facing the stable yard is one storey plus a loft and consists of three bays. It has a central doorway flanked by small windows, with a studded loft door located in a gabled half dormer above. To the left, there are boarded double doors beneath a segmental arch, while to the right, there is a 20th-century opening. The building has coped gables. The right side, which faces the churchyard, features a slatted loft window in the gable and an attached flat-coped wall to the left that includes a gateway, linking it to the northeast corner of Grovewood House. All openings are framed with chamfered surrounds.
This outbuilding is included for its group value with Grovewood House and the Church of St. James.
