Description
This headstone, located 1.5 metres south of the east end of the chancel of the Church of St. Maurice, dates back to 1722 and is made of sandstone. It features a gable-topped design with raised ornamentation along the edge and a sunk arched panel that is flanked by pilasters. The inscription commemorates Samual Crisp, son of Richard Crisp of Hedgely, and includes a verse that reflects on affliction and death:
"Affliction Sore with Patience Borne Physician was in Vain til Death Gave Ease When God Did please to Free him From his paine."
On the reverse side, there is a sunk triangular panel that displays a central stylised mask, accompanied by a death's head and crossed bones. This headstone represents an early version of a common rhyme found on memorials.
