Description

Garden Terraces, located about 15 yards south of Ovingham Vicarage, are terrace walls and steps that likely date back to the 17th century. They are constructed from random rubble and dressed stone. The structure features two terrace retaining walls with steeply ridged coping, which are interrupted near the center by two flights of steps. There is a similar third retaining wall at the end of the garden. At the corners of the walls, there are square hollowed-out blocks that probably served as bases for statues or finials. A datestone at the foot of the steps marks the Tyne flood level from December 31, 1815, while another datestone higher up indicates the level for April 1771.
