Description
The Blyth Submariners' War Memorial is located in the north-eastern part of Blyth Cemetery, following the traditional practice of burying shipwrecked sailors on the northern side of burial grounds. This stone monument features a broken ship’s mast that rises from a rocky plinth, which is elevated on a two-stepped base. The plinth is decorated with a lifebuoy and anchor carved in relief, along with a rope that twists around the mast. At the base of the mast, the inscription reads SACRED/ TO THE/ MEMORY/ OF.
The dedication continues on the face of the plinth below, stating THEY THAT GO DOWN/ TO THE SEA IN SHIPS/ AND OCCUPY THEIR/ BUSINESS IN GREAT/ WATERS, THESE MEN SEE/ THE WORKS OF THE LORD/ AND HIS WONDERS IN/ THE DEEP. PSALM 107 V 23. Below this inscription, there is a carving of a submarine on the surface of the ocean. The names of three submariners from HMS E30 and one sailor from HMS Trident are recorded on the top step of the base. George Lyons’ date of death is inscribed on the bottom step, along with the words ERECTED BY THEIR SHIPMATES.
