Description
Hole Bastle is a bastle house dating from the 16th century, located 20 yards north of Hole Farmhouse in Bellingham. The building features long sides that have been heightened, with first-floor windows added in the 18th century. It is constructed from random rubble that is 4½ feet thick, with a boulder plinth and a stone slate roof. The structure stands 2½ storeys tall, measuring 35 feet by 22 feet.
The original ground-floor doorway has been blocked on the left side, with a later door inserted on the right side. There is a slightly later stone outside stair leading to the original first-floor doorway, which has a chamfered surround and rebates for a horizontally-hung door. On either side of the building are 18th-century windows, while two smaller original windows, measuring 16 by 18 inches, have been re-set above; these have chamfered surrounds with holes for two vertical iron bars. A similar window is located at the rear, along with two slit windows on the right side, and five pigeon holes above an alighting ledge in the right gable.
Inside, the ground floor has a barrel-vaulted ceiling with a narrow ladder-hole leading to the first floor. The first-floor fireplace features a timber lintel and a square recess to the right. A rustic wooden stair provides access to the attic.
