Description
The Bickerton and Dickson headstones, dating from the 18th century, are located 2 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St. Maurice in Eglingham Village. They are made of sandstone. The southern headstone features a steeply-arched top with a relief-carved cherub above the inscription for William Dickson, who died in 1735. On the reverse, there is an oval cartouche in a moulded panel, depicting a recumbent hourglass and a death's head. The northern headstone has a shaped top and bears the inscription for Mary Bickerton, who died at the age of 13 in 1781, along with a verse that reflects on the brevity of life.
