Description
The stable block, located 20 metres north of Acomb House, dates from the late 17th century and was originally a house before being remodeled in the mid 18th century. The front is constructed of squared rubble with tooled-and-margined dressings, while the other elevations are made of rubble. It has a 20th-century grey tile roof. The south elevation features two storeys with seven irregular bays, including three two-panel doors and two elliptical arches to the right. The fenestration is varied, mostly using old openings with alternating-block surrounds. There is a five-step mounting block to the far right, and the roof is hipped.
On the right return, the end of the main block displays two four-pane sash windows on the first floor. Set back to the right is a two-bay rear wing that has similar windows and an external stone stair leading to a door in an extruded projection. At the rear of the wing, there is a blocked elliptical arch with a doorway inserted, along with four-pane sash windows.
Inside, the cross wall shows angle quoins and fireplaces from the 17th-century house on both the ground and first floors. There is a range of cottages attached to the rear wing that were remodeled around 1980, but these are not of interest.
