Description

The Town Hall, built between 1754 and 1760, was designed by architects S and J Worrell, who provided plans, two elevations, and one section for a fee of £31.10.0. The construction was carried out by Pattison and Dodds. This building serves as a prominent focal point at the east end of Marygate, positioned centrally in the roadway and facing west along the main shopping street.

The west end features an impressive giant Tuscan portico supported by four columns, accessed by a high flight of steps. A frieze on the portico states that the building was completed in 1754 and restored in 1857-1858. The entrance doorway beneath the portico is inscribed with "Joseph Dods. archt." The Town Hall is topped with a belfry that rises to 150 feet, resembling the design of Gibbs' St Martin in the Fields.

The east end, which faces the corner of Church Street and Hide Hill, has round arches on Tuscan columns and includes an open area with a paved butter market on the ground floor. The south facade features four open arches and ten arches that have been closed and are now occupied by shops. The first floor contains a well-preserved Georgian assembly room with Venetian windows, while the top floor, which has barred windows, originally housed the town gaol and is now used as a museum for gaol relics.
