Description
The monument to John Wormald is located approximately 30 yards west of the Church of St. Mary in Ovingham. It was erected in 1874 and designed by R.L. Armstrong. The memorial is made of ashlar and features an inscribed plinth with a statue above. The base is a two-stage square design with a rounded top edge adorned with leafy carvings. Above this, a square column has cable-moulded edges and an inscription that reads: "Erected by the workers of Prudhoe Colliery in memory of John Wormald aged 57 years who accidentally lost his life on the first day of June 1874 on the engine plane while following his vocation as overman in Prudhoe Colliery. A constant friend to those under his charge and a man of an affectionate and amiable disposition and endeared to all who knew him."
At the top, there is a concave cornice with leaf carving, supporting the figure of the deceased, who is depicted kneeling on one knee with his elbow resting on his other knee. The carving is very rustic in style.
