Description
The former stable block, located approximately 55 metres northeast of Preston Tower, was built around 1802 for Edmund Craster and extended around 1860. This Grade II listed structure features dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof and brick chimneys, arranged in an L-plan over two storeys.
The long wing on the left consists of nine bays, with the first four bays being the 1860 addition. This section includes sash windows on the ground floor and 20th-century casements above. Bays five and six feature segmental carriage arches with boarded double doors above, and between them is an oval panel displaying a raven and the inscription: EDMD CRASTER/1802.
To the right, there is a three-bay stable with a boarded door and flanking twelve-pane sash windows, along with five six-pane sashes on the first floor. The short wing projecting on the right has three bays, with two boarded doors and a twelve-pane sash on the ground floor, and three six-pane sashes above.
The long range has a gabled roof on the left, complete with a kneeler, ridged coping, and three corniced ridge stacks with two conjoined shafts. The short range features a hipped roof on the right. On the right return, there is a dovecote with four small pigeon holes in a stone screen, and a lintel above is dated 1803.
At the rear, there is a lean-to cartshed supported by four square piers and lintels.
