Description

Blackwell Grange Hotel is a building dating from the early 18th century, with a central section completed in 1710 for the industrialist George Allan, flanked by wings added in the mid-18th century. The entrance front features a three-storey central section with five small windows, constructed of old red brick that has been much restored. It has a parapet in front of a steeply-pitched, hipped, tiled roof. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are set beneath rebuilt arches.

A later addition is a projecting one-storey porch made of red brick with stone dressings, topped with four urn finials on the parapet. The two-storey wings on either side are much larger, made of pinkish brick with parapets above wood-moulded and modillioned cornices. Pilasters extend through the parapets, supporting thin urn finials. The roofs of the wings are hipped and slated with a moderate pitch. The sash windows in these wings also have gauged flat red brick arches and stone cills. The north wing features a three-bay right return, while the south wing has a ten-bay return, creating an impressive south front with long casements on the ground floor. There are modern extensions to the west and north. The hotel is set within a designed landscape that has early 18th-century origins and was remodelled after 1805.
