Description
17 and 18 Market Place are two estate cottages located in Bishop Auckland, dating from the early 18th century, with some 20th-century alterations. The buildings are finished in painted render with painted ashlar dressings and feature a French tile roof. They are designed with a 1:2 storey height and have 2:3 window arrangements.
No. 18, which was originally a stable, is situated on the left and has a central 20th-century door along with three 20th-century windows. It features eaves gutter brackets and a gabled dormer that rises from the eaves on the left, adorned with decorated bargeboards. The roof has a rendered chimney at the left end, and the rear elevation includes a full-height carriage arch that has been blocked.
No. 17 is located on the right and has a central six-panel door, with the upper panels being glazed, set within a painted ashlar surround that includes an architrave with a pulvinated frieze and cornice. This cottage has 20th-century casement windows, with three-light windows on the ground floor and two-light windows above, all in plain reveals. The roof features rendered chimneys at the ends. These cottages are included for their group value.
