Description

The Aycliffe Wood occupation bridge is a railway overbridge designed by Thomas Storey for the Stockton & Darlington Railway, built in 1832. It is constructed from rock-faced ashlar sandstone.

The bridge features a basket arch made of voussoirs, designed to accommodate a dual track railway line. A roll-moulded string course forms an arch ring around the voussoirs, which merges with a second, more pronounced string course that marks the base of the parapet. The parapet is topped with a triangular coping, and the inner face of the parapets is smoothly dressed rather than rock-faced. The road deck has a narrow waisted plan form, with the parapets flaring outwards beyond the pilasters that flank the arch.
