Description
The School Aycliffe Lane overbridge is a railway overbridge designed by Thomas Storey for the Stockton & Darlington Railway, built in 1832 and widened on its northern side in the 1980s. It is constructed from rock-faced ashlar sandstone.
The bridge features a single basket arch on its original southern elevation, made of voussoirs, designed to accommodate a dual-track railway line. A roll-moulded string course runs at impost level, forming an arch ring around the voussoirs, which merges into a more pronounced string course that marks the base of the parapet. The arch is flanked by plain pilasters, and the parapets are topped with triangular coping, with the northern parapet having been rebuilt. The northern half of the bridge deck is supported by horizontal bridging beams, which partly obscure the original northern elevation of the bridge.
