Description

The sundial located 20 metres west of Lumley Castle is a Grade II listed structure dating from 1716. It features a sandstone sundial mounted on a later white marble column and pedestal. The pedestal is corniced and includes a cyma-moulded plinth and die, with a raised border and circle on each face. The Tuscan column stands 2.0 metres high. The sundial itself is polyhedric, shaped like a sphere with 24 faceted faces, each inscribed with letters and equipped with an iron gnomon; two of the square faces are dated 1716. At the top, there is a vase with a gadrooned design and a small pineapple finial.
