Description
Chester New Bridge is a single-track road bridge over the River Wear, leading to the south-west arched gateway to Lambton Park. It likely dates from the 15th century and features a partly rebuilt parapet made of dressed stone.
The bridge has a span of approximately 45 metres, with both faces being similar in design. It includes four pointed arches composed of two chamfered orders, with each arch supported by five chamfered ribs, some of which have been partly restored. Triangular-plan cutwaters are positioned between the arches, with three on each face. These cutwaters have multi-chamfered plinths, sloping tops, and rise to meet the parapet band. The slightly projecting parapet has restored coping and splayed north end walls. There is a large abutment with offsets at the north-west end.
The bridge is located at the boundary of Chester-le-Street and the parish of Bournmoor.
