Description
This boundary stone, located approximately 5 metres north-east of the gate to Waskerley Farm on Nanny Mayer's Incline, is a railway boundary marker likely dating from around 1844. It was created for the Stockton and Darlington Railway Company. The stone is a tapered sandstone slab, about one metre high, with a rounded top and tooled faces. The letters "S&D" are inscribed in Roman capitals on the south face. Historically, the Stockton and Darlington Company took over the Stanhope and Tyne Railroad Company after it faced financial difficulties.
