Description

These two terraces of colliery housing, numbered 1 to 20 and 21 to 38, were built around 1875 for the Wearside Iron and Coal Company. They are constructed from tooled squared sandstone on the front elevations, with coursed rubble forming the returns and rear walls. The roofs are covered in Welsh slate, topped with dark-red brick chimney stacks. The northern terrace (numbered 1 to 20) sits on a level site, while the southern terrace (numbered 21 to 38) is stepped down to follow a slightly sloping site.

Both terraces are two storeys high and feature flush quoins marking the ends of each terrace. Each house has one bay, with doorways positioned alternately to the right and left of the ground-floor windows. Most doorways have been replaced, but number 1 retains its original four-panel door with a three-pane overlight. Windows have flush lintels and projecting sills; while many now have late 20th-century 12-pane casements, several houses retain original 12- and 16-pane sashes. The roofs are moderately pitched and hipped, with a continuous ridge on the north terrace and a stepped-down ridge on the south terrace. The chimney stacks are stepped transverse ones with oversailing top courses. A one-storey, two-bay lean-to addition with horizontal-sliding sashes is attached to the right return of number 1. Rear additions are not considered to be of particular architectural interest.

The terraces are a relatively late example, though they retain an early 19th-century style. Despite replacement doors and windows, all original window and door openings remain.
