Description
This is a pillar box located approximately 87 metres east-south-east of the Bandstand at Beamish Museum. It was built between 1872 and 1879 and was gifted around 1960 from the General Post Office. The pillar box is an octagonal design of the third Penfold type. It features a plinth with moulded coping, a high band with a slot flanked by the words "POST" and "OFFICE," and a moulded cornice. The top has a leaf-decorated low ogee shape with a bud finial, and the VR monogram is positioned below the frame for the list of collection times. The name of the founder, Cochrane and Co. from Dudley, is inscribed on the plinth.
