Description
The bandstand, located in the town area opposite Ravensworth Terrace, dates from the late 19th century. It was originally situated in Saltwell Park, Gateshead, and was moved and rebuilt at Beamish Museum in 1978. The structure features a light-red engineering brick and stone base with a cast-iron and wood superstructure, designed in an octagonal shape.
The low base consists of three courses of Flemish-bond brickwork topped with chamfered stone coping. It is supported by eight thin columns adorned with Roman Ionic capitals. Between the columns are low railings, each divided into three panels: the central panel showcases bird, butterfly, and floral motifs, while the flanking panels feature wavy bars. The columns support posts with scrolled brackets and stylised lyres. The bandstand is topped with a low-pitched hipped roof that has overhanging eaves and is crowned by an open cupola, which includes scrollwork and an ornamental finial.
