Description

Pontop Hall is a farmhouse dating to the late 17th century and around 1700. The main block is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings, while a left extension is of two builds, using thinly-rendered rubble with large quoins and a boulder plinth. The main block has a concrete tile roof, the left part has stone flags, and all have stone gable copings and brick chimneys.

The main block is two storeys with four irregular bays, the second and fourth bays being wider. A 20th-century porch at the left obscures a renewed door and its surround. The windows are renewed sashes with glazing bars—12-pane in the left two bays, 16-pane at the right—and flat stone lintels, with projecting stone sills. Four half-dormers are present, the outer ones blocked, with fixed lights in the inner ones, beneath the gables. The steeply-pitched roof has end chimneys and curved kneelers; the left return gable features an external stack.

The left wing is of two low storeys and two wide bays, built in two phases, with the first bay at the left featuring large quoins. A boarded door is located to the right of the first bay, beneath a flat stone lintel. Ground-floor sashes have glazing bars. The first floor has three-light wood-mullioned casements; the one at the left has a moulded stone head, with stone mullions removed and a brick sill inserted. A wide chimney rises on the ridge to the right of the first build. The left return gable of the wing shows a boarded door, large quoins, and blocked windows with chamfered stone surrounds. Ground-floor blocked windows retain a central stone mullion. A rear outshut is on the left part, and a double-span rear wing extends at a right angle to the main block, with one span over the stair and a second being an original wing extended in the 19th century.

Inside the main house, an open-well stair is within the rear wing, with a ramped grip handrail on three turned balusters per tread. Doorways from the stairwell have round heads on pilasters. Deep fielded panelling is present in the right bay on both floors, with hinged panels revealing blocked windows in the right return gable. Similar panelling is in the first-floor room of the rear wing. A left ground-floor room was reportedly once fitted with a flat Tudor-arched stone fire surround, now concealed by 20th-century wallpaper. The attic formerly held a Catholic chapel from the mid-18th century, of which two Tuscan columns flanking the former communion rail remain. The left wing contains large flat Tudor-arched stone fire surrounds in both ground-floor rooms, and a smaller chimney-piece in the same style on the first floor. Massive, closely-spaced first-floor joists are also a feature. The rear stair is a closed-string, dogleg stair with a moulded handrail on splat balusters.
