Description

A group of four headstones located approximately 10 to 12.5 metres west of the Church of St. Mary, dating from the 17th and early 18th centuries. The tombs commemorate John Alderson, who died in 1728; Robert Lodge and Edward Gargranet, both of whom died in 1677; and E.P. and John Pearson, who died in 1715 and 1727. The headstones are made of coarse sandstone and stand about 0.5 metres high. The Alderson tomb is straight-sided with canted corners, while the Lodge and Gargranet tombs are goblet-shaped with shaped tops. The Pearson tomb is straight-sided with a pointed top. The Alderson tomb features low relief angels holding a crown, the Lodge tomb has a moulded surround with leaf decoration at the top, the Gargranet tomb is similar to that of Lodge, and the Pearson tomb includes a central inscription for E.P. 1715, with a well-cut inscription for John Pearson above and below, and top winged cherubs carved in a single scrolly line in a calligraphic style.
