Description
This is a railway indicator stone, likely dating from around 1830 for the Stockton and Darlington Railway. It is made of ashlar grit sandstone and is a square block approximately half a metre high with a low pointed top. The stone is set diagonally on the south side of the rail bed. The letter "M" is inscribed on the north-east face, and the letter "C" is on the north-west face, which probably stand for Middlesbrough and Copley, the endpoints of the Hagger Leases branch and the Middlesbrough branch, both established in 1830.
