Description
The structure consists of piers, walls, and gates located 60 metres west of Harraton Lodge. It was built around 1815 by Ignatius Bonomi for John Lambton, who later became the 1st Earl of Durham. The construction features ashlar sandstone walls and piers, along with iron gates, all designed in a classical style.
The gates are flanked by a pair of tall gate piers that are two stages high. The lower stage has a cornice and exhibits chamfered rustication, with a set-back round-arched niche that includes a console keystone and imposts. The upper stage resembles a pedestal and features a recessed carved panel adorned with a Ram's head and festoon, flanked by piers. The ends of this stage have a plinth, a dentilled cornice, and a blocking course that projects forward.
The tall quadrant walls are built with a plinth and have stepped coping. The short end sections of the convex quadrant wall are framed by battered piers that also display chamfered rustication and shaped caps.
The pair of large gates includes narrow side panels, with close-set bars and dogbars topped with spike finials. The gates have a double top rail that features linked half-circles.
