Description
The windmill, located north-west of the College of St Cuthbert, was built in 1817. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. The structure features a wide tapered tower that stands two storeys high. It has flat stone lintels above boarded doors and openings, with beam-holes visible at the gallery level. The first-floor openings are truncated at the lintel level. The windmill was built shortly after the college was established to provide unadulterated flour and was financed personally by John Gillow.
