Description
The Former Junior Seminary Chapel of St Aloysius at St. Cuthbert's College, Ushaw, is a Grade II* listed building constructed in the Gothic Revival style. It is built from coursed squared sandstone with an ashlar plinth and dressings, topped with a roof of graduated Lakeland slates and stone gable copings.
The chapel features a nave with a south transept and a Lady chapel located to the east of the transept. Its exterior is marked by high pointed arched windows, with 2-light windows in the nave, 4-light windows in the transept, and a 5-light window in the east front, all set under dripmoulds in buttressed bays. Diagonal buttresses support the transept, while set-back buttresses are found at the east and west ends. A sill string is stepped to accommodate the large windows and the 6-foil Lady chapel window. Gablets adorn the buttresses and the kneelers of the steeply-pitched corbelled roof, which is topped with stone cross finials.
Inside, the chapel features painted plaster walls with long wall-posts on angel corbels that support an arch-braced panelled roof, decorated with stencils by Earley of Dublin. The north entrance and organ arches are both 2-centred. The interior boasts rich decoration, including a painted moulded dado rail with naturalistic leaf stops and painted decoration in the Lady chapel, created around 1890 by Rev. Henry Gillow. The high altar is made of Caen stone with marble shafts and an alabaster tabernacle arch, featuring high-relief carved roundels and scenes from the life of St. Aloysius in the reredos. A seated statue of Our Lady, the Mother of Jesus, by Karl Hoffmann is located on the north side of the altar. The west bay of the north wall contains the altar of St. Innocent, designed in 1882 by Charles Hadfield, which has a marble front and shafts, along with Caen stone crocketed canopies, although it is now missing its plated reliquary doors. The Lady chapel features a richly-carved altar designed by Canon Scruton, and the organ is painted in a Gothic style by Bevington. The 19th-century stained glass includes pieces by Hardman.
