Description

The Eldon War Memorial was erected in 1921 and later augmented to commemorate the Second World War. It stands in the north-eastern corner of the churchyard of the Church of St Mark. The memorial consists of a granite cross and base, set upon a stepped Yorkstone podium. The structure is an octagonal granite column topped with a Gothic crucifix. The column has a rectangular base with leaded lettering reading "SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS DISTRICT WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918." The sides of the column are chamfered and have rounded stops. Below the column is a pedestal with canted plain panels to the front and back, and framed recessed panels to the sides. This pedestal sits on a staged, stepped base; the upper stage widens slightly towards the base, while the lower base is a rectangular plinth with projecting square corners and inclined panels between. The front and rear panels of the pedestal bear the names of those who died in the First World War, arranged in three columns, while the side panels feature two columns of names, with some names extending down onto the upper stage of the pedestal base. The front panel of the upper stage has leaded lettering reading “THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM AND PEACE / ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION.” The inclined front panel of the lower stage of the pedestal base reads "ALSO OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN / THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945," and the inclined panels record the names of those who died in the Second World War, with three names recorded on the projecting square corners. The memorial is set on a rectangular, stepped Yorkstone podium surfaced with paving slabs and edging stones.
