Description
The War Memorial in Greencroft, Stanley, was built around 1919 by Ayton, Blackhill. It features a tall granite obelisk that stands on a tapered plinth, which has a gadrooned cornice and is elevated by a base of two steps. The plinth bears an inscription that reads: "ERECTED BY THE OWNERS / OFFICIALS AND WORKMEN / OF SOUTH PONTOP COLLIERY / IN MEMORY OF / OUR VILLAGE COMRADES / WHO FELL IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918," along with a motto on the base.
