Description
This is a barn, gin-gang, and outbuildings located approximately 100 meters northeast of Low Shipley Farmhouse, likely dating from the mid 18th century to the 19th century. The structure is built from sandstone rubble with quoins and ashlar dressings, featuring a pantiled roof, except for the gin-gang which has a corrugated iron roof.
The barn is two stories tall and has two bays, with a one-story, three-bay outbuilding attached on the right and a small one-story, one-bay extension on the right side. The gin-gang is situated at the rear of the barn. The barn includes side stone steps leading to a Dutch door, and there are two worn stone steps in the second bay of the first floor. A flat stone lintel is above the door, and there is a small square vent on the ground floor to the left, along with a vent slit above it.
The one-story building has partly-glazed ventilators at the eaves flanking a boarded door, with a similar door in the lower right extension. The gable coping of the barn features small steps made from rubble courses. The left side of the barn shows a segmental-arched entrance with rough voussoirs, which is partly obscured by 20th-century double boarded vehicle doors, and there are two vent slits on the first floor.
At the gable peak, there are two tiers of pigeon holes formed by thin bricks set diagonally on two brick shelves, creating a rough triangular shape. A small pent roof one-story, one-bay rear extension on the left side was originally an earth closet. The rear gin-gang consists of five stone piers, with some openings partly blocked, and retains original internal beams, contributing to its group value.
