Description
This is a limestone coffin located 2 meters south of the south chancel wall of the Church of St. Mary. It dates from the 14th century and features a coped grave cover. The grave cover is believed to have originally had an inscription that read: "HIC IACET RICARDVS MILES DE IHELAND" in Lombardic capitals, although this inscription is now no longer legible. Historical records indicate that John De Yeland was the rector of Seaham in 1279, and in 1349, William De Yeland held half of the Manor of Seaham from the Bishop of Durham.
