Description

Tamerton Bridge is a railway bridge that spans Tamerton Lake, a tidal creek where the River Tamer meets the River Tavy. It marks the boundary between the City of Plymouth and the parish of Bickleigh. Built around 1889-90, this iron pile and girder bridge features seven spans supported by pairs of iron-clad circular piers, which are cross-braced, and it holds iron girders topped with balustrades. The Plymouth Devonport South-Western Junction Railway Company, established in 1883, opened this line from Lydford to Devonport in 1890. The line was operated by the London and South Western Railway, which had a small stake in the company, before fully taking over in 1922.
