Description
The Folkestone Harbour Viaduct and Swing Bridge is a notable structure consisting of 13 segmentally-headed red brick arches, with one arch on the north side of the harbour hidden by the adjacent jetty access ramp. The viaduct crosses approximately two thirds of the harbour, while the swing bridge spans the remaining distance to the south.
The swing bridge is made of steel and features three main longitudinal girders. It is supported by a brick base with stone quoins, which are original to the bridge built in 1893. The bridge is operated by an electric capstan on the wharf and a rope, with the lifting and locking mechanisms being hand operated.
