Description

Ffynnonau Farmhouse is a farmhouse built from whitewashed rubble stone, topped with slate roofs and featuring small brick stacks. It is two storeys high and has a long main range with a stack at the right end and a ridge stack. The left end has a crosswing that is slightly lower at the ridge, with a hipped roof at the front and a gable with a brick stack at the rear.

The main range includes two square 4-pane sash windows under the eaves at the extreme left, above a door that angles towards the crosswing, and a large 3-light window with top-lights. A buttress has been added between the door and the window. To the right, there is a tiny ground floor window, and between the two stacks is a gabled dormer that breaks the eaves, featuring a pair of casement windows and another large 3-light window with top-lights on the ground floor. A timber lintel in the wall to the left may indicate a blocked window.

The crosswing has a tiny pair of casement windows on the ground floor to the right, in the angle with the main range, beneath a substantial timber lintel from a former larger opening. There is also a casement pair under the eaves to the left. A door in the gable end has a chamfered timber lintel and is located to the right of an added lean-to. The side wall features outside steps leading to an eaves-breaking loft door beneath a catslide roof. A similar roof covers the eaves-breaking casement pair to the left. There is a single-storey addition on the end wall.

At the rear of the main range, there are two square 6-pane sash windows under the eaves to the right, above a triple casement window. A door leads to a cross passage further right, in the angle with the single-storey rear addition. On the left end, between the chimneys, there are two small dormers above the eaves, one flat and one gabled, with the latter positioned over a triple casement window.

Inside, there is a cross-passage from the entry leading to two rooms on the right. The beams are heavily chamfered, with stepped hollow stops, including four in the kitchen. The fireplace has been renewed, and it previously had stairs to one side, which have been removed but the sloping underside is still visible in the end room. This end room features three beams with smaller chamfers and stepped hollow stops, along with plank doors. The crosswing appears to have been added as a grain loft, possibly in the 18th century, with a ground floor ceiling supported by two beams and three cross beams, all chamfered with stepped hollow stops. The fireplace in this area has an iron range marked 'Herald'.
