Model Cottages

Nos 1-4 Model Cottages are a small terrace of estate workers' cottages built in a vernacular style in 1891. The cottages are two storeys high, featuring sandstone ashlar ground storeys and mock timber framing above, topped with red tile roofs. The terrace consists of five bays, with bays 1, 3, and 5 designed as gabled wings that project forward. Between the gables are verandahs with pentice tiled roofs, and the entrances to the four cottages are located at each end of the verandahs. Each verandah has two plain windows, while each gable end features a 3-light mullion and transom casement window. The upper floor includes two panels with cross-bracing below the windows in the gables, and otherwise has plain square framing with rendered panels. Each gable has a cross-framed casement, and there is a 3-light mullion and transom casement in a gabled dormer located in the roofs between the gables. Most windows, except for the ground floor window of No 4, are in keeping with the original character but appear to be modern replacements. The cottages have chimney stacks at either end, in the centre, and on the rear slope behind each dormer, all topped with tall clay pots. The rear elevation was not visible during the survey. The only original ground floor window is located in No 4. The interior was not seen during the resurvey.
