Description
The barn at The Elms is a Grade II listed building constructed from red sandstone rubble, which is still visible on the yard side but painted on the road side. It features a corrugated steel sheet roof and serves mixed purposes, with a corn bay on the left, a central threshing floor, and a cowhouse with a hayloft above on the right.
On the road side, there are two slit vents to the left of the double doors and two square vents for the cowhouse on the right. The right gable includes a 19th-century lean-to shed. The yard side has a modern lean-to covering the left bay, replacement double doors, one slit vent, and an added stable. The left gable appears to be blind.
Inside, the barn has five bays of principal rafter trusses, all made of oak and pegged, with ties and collars, three tiers of purlins, a ridge piece, and secondary rafters, all intact. The threshing floor is paved.
