Description
The Port Wall is a Grade I listed town wall constructed entirely of unworked stone rubble. It encloses an area of 130 acres and originally extended from the west end of the Castle to a point on the eastern river bank, forming a perimeter around the peninsula. The wall measures over two-thirds of a mile in length, is more than 2 meters thick, and stands between 5 to 7 meters high. It features an embattled design with a wall-walk. The bastions are approximately 9 meters in diameter, D-shaped, and lack arrow slits, being open at the back and previously equipped with timber staging. The only openings in the wall are a series of square slots designed to drain water from the wall-walk. Some coping stones remain in certain areas. From a square turret in Castle Dell, the wall extends southward and is clearly visible in the car park, where it turns southeast to connect with the Town Gate, integrated into surrounding buildings on either side. It can also be seen again on elevated ground south of the relief road and along the crest of the quarry near the station, where five bastions are located in this section.
