Description
Abergavenny Public Library is a building constructed from coursed squared rock-faced sandstone, featuring Bath stone ashlar quoins and dressings, topped with natural slate roofs. The structure has a two-storey central section flanked by single-storey halls that are positioned at right angles to each other. The gabled elevation, made of stone, faces the corner of Victoria Street and Baker Street, representing the gable end of the left-hand hall.
The central section includes a large four-light bay window, which is divided by stone mullions and topped with battlements, accompanied by a small window behind it. This bay window is flanked by lancet windows with traceried heads, and there are six transomed windows on the left return. The roof is plain with a central ventilator. The gable features four finials and a central statue of a woman holding a book at its apex.
To the right of the central section is a two-storey area that contains the main entrance, which is a Gothic door adorned with a hoodmould that has carved stops, depicting the heads of Andrew Carnegie on the left and the Marquis of Abergavenny on the right. Above the door is a three-light stone mullioned window with a sash set back to the right. Further to the right is a hall that has four windows with transoms, angled ends, and a hipped roof with a central ventilator.
The interior spaces of the library remain largely unaltered and were always simply finished, featuring open timber roofs.
