Description
Castell Morgraig is a historic irregular pentagonal curtain wall castle, featuring towers at four corners and a keep at the fifth corner. The western entrance is original, while a later access point has been cut through to the east. The thick walls are made of roughly coursed conglomerate stone and stand between 1 and 3 meters high, with dressings believed to be of Sutton stone. The keep, located opposite the western entrance and next to the later eastern entrance, is square and larger than the towers, although much of the eastern wall is missing. The massive towers have rounded ends and splayed side walls, with some remains of doorways leading into them from the courtyard still visible. The southern towers include circular basements, which served as retaining structures to support the castle on a steep scarp. There are low, indistinct earthworks in the courtyard, and it is said that a stone base for a timber staircase once existed against the western curtain wall, leading to the upper floor. The stone used for the castle's construction was quarried on-site, resulting in distinctive earthworks along the scarp of the hill.
