Description
The monuments to James Thomas and his family at New Bethel consist of two structures made from marble and stone. The main feature is a tall, near life-size marble figure of James Thomas, dressed in contemporary attire. This imposing figure stands over the graveyard, gazing down into the valley. He holds a scroll in his right hand, while his left hand rests on a draped pillar. The figure is positioned on a plinth that is supported by a tall rectangular monument, which is heavily moulded and features clustered shafts at each corner. Each face of the monument has a very steep pitched gable topped with urns at the corners, and there is an inscription panel facing the same direction as the figure.
Beneath this is a further moulded tiered plinth enclosed by a stone surround, which is decorated with pierced trefoils and blind gothic arches on the piers. The entire monument stands on a wider platform made of heavily rusticated stone that faces downhill. This platform is surrounded by freestanding piers with caps at each corner and railings that complete the outer enclosure on three sides facing uphill. Adjacent to the wall is a stone tomb chest featuring a deep stepped plinth. The slab of the tomb chest has a raised central section, with finials at each end. The sides of the tomb chest display leaded inscription panels set within a triple trefoil-headed arcade, complete with carved spandrels.
