Description
The Black Lion Hotel is a three-storey building featuring a two plus three-window front. The first and second floors are rendered, while the ground floor is rusticated. It has vermiculated quoins and pilasters at the ends of both sections that rise from a sill band on the first floor. The slate roof includes a parapet at the front, but the chimney stacks and dormers have been removed. The hotel displays a Black Lion emblem to the right.
The first and second floors have 16-pane sash windows with architraves. The main entrance is centrally located in the three-window section and features a porch supported by cylindrical cast iron columns on stone plinths, with octagonal bases and capitals. Ionic pilasters flank the entrance, which has panelled reveals, a four-panel door, and frosted lettering on the overlight. On either side of the entrance are two flatly splayed timber bays with casement glazing and leaded lights at the top. These bays have reeded colonnettes with bulbous bases and capitals, and a toothed band below the fascia that features an interlaced ogee pattern.
To the left, in the two-window section, there is a similar bay, and at the extreme left, there are two sashes without glazing bars, but with tall vermiculated keystones. The right gable end facing Monk Street has 12-pane sashes above modern bar windows, with a painted sill band that continues across the two-storey cross range, including the gable end to the right, which is parallel to the main front. This cross range has a three-window elevation facing southwest with horned 12-pane sash windows and modern extensions on the ground floor. Attached wall screens lead to the yard, and at a right angle is a taller rubble range with a cambered arch on the ground floor, which was formerly a coach house.
