Description
This is a Unitarian Church built in the late 19th century, displaying a simplified Queen Anne style with Italianate influences. The main fabric is red-brown brick with dressings of Ham Hill stone, which is considerably eroded. The roof is slate, with a raised central section.
The building is arranged around a two-storey flat-roofed vestibule. The vestibule block is divided into three sections by stone pilasters. A single-storey stone porch is at the northern end, in front of the bell tower. The central section has three bays with small rectangular windows on the ground floor and taller, segmental-headed windows with decorative brackets above. The southern end features a single bay with a long fenestrated recess, displaying the date '1886', a rectangular window at mid-level, and a circular window at the upper level. The chapel’s end wall is set back behind the vestibule, with corner pilasters and a central three-light window framed by a small stone pediment under a round-headed arch, surmounted by a Dutch gable with a stone pediment.
The bell tower projects forward from the chapel and rises in four stages; the upper stage is stone with round-headed openings on each side, rounded corners, and a wide overhanging roof cornice with pediments to each side. The side walls of the main building are divided into bays by brick pilasters, with two-light rectangular windows on the ground floor and round-headed two-light windows above.
A side door from the street leads to an entrance hall with steps down to the hall and then up to a first-floor landing with an open stone staircase, including stone balustrading. A further set of steps leads to a spacious vestibule on the first floor. The rectangular chapel itself has walls of dark red-brown brick and stone detailing. The front wall is divided into three bays by stone pilasters; the lower part of the central bay is deeply recessed under round-headed brick vaulting with a stone pediment above. The right-hand bay has double doors and a round-headed window above, while the left-hand bay is recessed under a round-headed arch and contains the organ and its pipes.
A raised wooden dais supports a central pulpit with steps on one side. Five high-backed seats for elders are positioned in a central recess behind the pulpit, decorated with a rising sun motif and the inscription "Glory to God in the Highest and on Earth Peace. Goodwill toward Men". There are five tall, round-headed windows with small coloured panes on each side wall. The rear wall features a glazed screen and entrance doors in the centre, round-headed recesses on either side, and a three-light round-headed window above. The sloping ceilings are dark timber-boarded, with a raised, glazed centre ceiling originally featuring circular windows (now filled in). The roof is supported by open timber trusses. Original timber pews and fittings remain, along with five memorial plaques on the walls. A flat-ceilinged hall is situated beneath the chapel.
